"The Little Insurrectionist" - a monument located at Podwale Street, commemorates the youngest participants of the Warsaw Uprising.

History

The monument was designed by Jerzy Jarnuszkiewicz in 1946 while he was studying sculpture at the Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts, Jarnuszkiewicz received recognition for his work, then titled "Child-hero", in a competition organized by the Union of Polish Visual Artists for a sculpture commemorating the Warsaw Uprising.

For many years, the "Little Insurrectionist" was primarily known through numerous miniature copies, reminding many families of the days of the uprising.

The initiative to erect a monument to the youngest participants of the Warsaw Uprising came from the scouts of the Capital Flag of the Polish Scouting and Guiding Association named after the Heroes of Warsaw as part of the 15th anniversary celebrations of the flag's naming. The funds to cover the costs of the casting and setting up of the monument (around 1 million Polish złoty) were collected by the scouts.

The unveiling of the monument on October 1, 1983, took the form of a solemn scout gathering. The unveiling was performed by Warsaw Uprising scout Jerzy Świderski, in the presence of hundreds of scouts from Warsaw and other cities in Poland, as well as representatives of authorities and the city's residents. The honor guard in front of the monument was composed of contemporaries of the youngest soldiers of the Warsaw Uprising.

Monument

The bronze sculpture depicts a young boy wearing a German Stahlhelm helmet, which was obtained from the Germans during the uprising, with a small eagle emblem and a white and red armband painted on it. He is wearing oversized boots and a coat, and he has a submachine gun slung over his shoulder.

The monument stands on the remains of the eighth semi-circular bastion of the outer defensive walls of the Old Town.

On the wall near the monument, a commemorative plaque made of red sandstone with a Scout cross and a fragment of the popular insurgent song "Warsaw Children" has been placed:

"Warsaw children, we will go into battle for every stone of yours we will give our blood Saint R. Dobrowolski

In tribute to the heroic peers, scouts Flag of the Capital ZHP named after the Heroes of Warsaw October 1, 1984"
