Tenement house under Gutenberg - a historic tenement house located in Łódź at 86 Piotrkowska Street, originally belonging to Jan Petersilge.

History

On December 15, 1893, Jan Petersilge purchased the plot of land together with the existing buildings on it and began the construction of a tenement house. The tenement house was completed in 1896, and was designed by architects Kazimierz Pomian-Sokołowski and Franciszek Chełmiński.

Before World War I, the building housed the office of Singer company, an elegant restaurant "Louvre", a clinic, a dental school, and the editorial office of the oldest newspaper in Łódź, "Lodzer Zeitung" (since 1897). In January 1915, the German occupation authorities closed the editorial office and replaced it with "Deutsche Lodzer Zeitung" which was published until 1918. In the same building, from December 30, 1915, the editorial office of "Godzina Polska" also operated, but due to its pro-German sympathies it was referred to as "Gadzina Polska". During the interwar period, the building housed the National Party's headquarters. During the Battle of the Bzura, the building served as the headquarters of the 8th German Army. In the years 1972-1973, the Address Gallery operated in the basement of the Club of the Association of Polish Artists and Designers.

The building was entered into the register of monuments under the number A/71 on January 20, 1971.

The building boasts an eclectic facade, which combines elements of neo-gothic, neo-renaissance, baroque, and secession styles. The facade is adorned with intricate decorations such as leaves, flowers, cupids, mascarons, and wreaths. The central bay window with a gable decorated with volutes is a prominent feature of the facade. In the central part, in a niche, there is a statue of John Gutenberg, and between the windows, there are medallions with portraits of printing inventors.

In the 1970s, this tenement house was recognized as the most beautiful tenement house in Łódź in a competition organized by Dziennik Łódzki, but it deteriorated over time, partly due to inadequate renovation works. In 2011, a general renovation of the facade of the tenement house was completed, restoring its original splendor. During the conservation works, garlands with pumpkins, sunflowers, grapes and other fruits and flowers painted on the pediment were discovered. Other elements such as metal dragons and plants, as well as wrought iron balustrades were also restored during the renovation.
