Grand Place is a historic square in the center of Brussels, one of the city's most important tourist attractions. It is home to two major landmarks — the Town Hall and the Bread House, also known as the King's House. The ensemble of the Brussels market square is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

History

The market square originated in the 12th century on the site of dried-up marshes. In the 13th century, the Bread House was built, which was used for storing bread. Later, this building came to be known as the King's House. Between 1402 and 1455, the Gothic building of the Town Hall was erected, which still stands today.

On August 13, 1695, the bombardment of Brussels by the French army began, lasting several days. As a result, the entire city center was destroyed. Only the Town Hall and, partially, the Bread House survived on the market square.

However, after the end of the war, the square was rebuilt by the wealthy guilds within four years, giving it an appearance very similar to what it is today. The guild houses were built in the Baroque style and the style of Louis XIV.

At the end of the 19th century, Belgian King Leopold II wanted to demolish the square along with all of medieval Brussels, considering it decrepit and provincial. The mayor of Brussels, Charles Buls, managed to save the square, and in modern times, a monument was erected in his honor in the city center.

Architectural Ensemble

The square houses two of the city's most important landmarks — the Town Hall and the Bread House (King's House). The square's ensemble is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The facades of the buildings on the square are adorned with intricate carvings, garlands, statuettes, and columns. Each of the ancient buildings has its own name, for example, "She-Wolf", "Cart", "Fox". The ensemble is completed by the Guildhalls Building.

Grand Place is also known for the tradition of creating an incredible flower carpet on the square every two years, in even years. The first event was held in 1971 and has since consistently attracted tourists from various countries. From August 15, for several days, a huge carpet of millions of colorful flowers is created.

The size of the flower carpet is impressive — 24 by 77 meters, covering an area of 1,800 square meters.

Additionally, an annual Christmas market is traditionally held on the square during the winter. At this time of year, the square is decorated, a Christmas tree is erected, and various stalls with souvenirs and food appear.
