The street starts at the Basilica of St. Mary and runs parallel towards the Motława and the closing Mariacki Gate. The street is closed to wheeled traffic. Midibuses of bus line 100 cross the street.
Ulica Mariacka was referred to as "ulica Panieńska" (Lady's Street) in early sources and "platea dominae Mariae" or "platea dominae nostrae" in Latin sources. In the 16th century, the street was shorter due to the marshiness of the land. This changed after the construction of the Mariacki Gate, mentioned as early as 1484. Excavations have confirmed the existence of numerous shoemaking workshops near the gate in the Middle Ages.
The buildings on Ulica Mariacka have typical Gdańsk architecture with projecting balconies.
